About Us

Auckland Taekwondo -Established 1997.

Auckland Taekwondo Martial Arts Incorporated (ATKD) is one of New Zealand’s longest running and most successful clubs which was first established in 1997 by Master Matt Ransom. We have over the years produced many top international New Zealand team representatives and national champions. ATKD also hosts international athletes, master-instructors and coaches. A number of top seeded athletes as well as NZ representatives, past and present, are members of Auckland Taekwondo.

Auckland Taekwondo practices the World Taekwondo Olympic style version of the martial art. We are a member of World Taekwondo New Zealand and our Dojang is recognised by the World Taekwondo Headquarters Kukkiwon Membership System (KMS).

What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is the Korean Martial Art of Self-Defence. It has a 2000-year history and today has developed into one of the most widely practised Martial Arts in the world and is also an Olympic Sport. Translated, Taekwondo means, the art of ‘striking with fists and feet’. But it actually has more meaning than just that.

Taekwondo builds strength, stamina and flexibility, it greatly improves one’s overall fitness and well-being. It develops athletic abilities and improves one’s capabilities in self-defence situations. Taekwondo also provides many other advantages such as learning self-discipline, competitive awareness and social skills. Through practising Taekwondo, students of all ages (particularly children) learn respect for themselves and others, heightened concentration, and increased self-discipline and self-restraint.

Learning Taekwondo with ATKD

We offer a welcoming and safe martial arts training environment for children, teenagers, adults, and families. We also have a great group of internationally experienced Senior Instructors, Coaches and Masters with many years’ experience at all levels to oversee the development of our members.

We are constantly striving for excellence through the correct practise of Taekwondo. We take a no-nonsense, no frills approach to our training. We cater for age groups from 5 years through to people over 50. We hold specialised traditional training for all grades and advanced elite sport-training for our athletes and NZ Team representatives. We also emphasise the importance of doing one’s best in every endeavour, no matter what your age or level of ability.

We believe in mixing the traditional aspects of Taekwondo with the new and keeping the balance. Good conduct and traditional etiquette are the foundation of all practices in our Dojangs. This way our members gain a more holistic view of both the martial art and sport of Taekwondo and continue developing themselves.

For real martial art training, real Taekwondo training and for real progress and self-achievement, Auckland Taekwondo will provide you with the means to make it happen!
